SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that can be transmitted through sexual contact. They can have negative effects on both physical and mental health. Here are the most common sexually transmitted diseases:
Chlamydia: Usually has no obvious symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they can be similar to urinary tract infections (pain, discharge). If left untreated, they can cause permanent damage to the reproductive organs.
Gonorrhea: Usually affects the urinary tract, reproductive organs, and throat. Symptoms can include painful urination, abnormal discharge, and sore throat.
Syphilis: Usually progresses in three stages: painless sores (chancres) in the first stage, rashes and general discomfort in the second stage, and effects on the heart and nervous system in the third stage.
Genital Herpes: Caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Symptoms can include painful sores, itching, and swelling. The virus can stay in the body for life and can recur frequently.
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV): It can cause genital warts and some types can lead to cervical cancer. Vaccines can protect against some types of HPV.
HIV/AIDS: HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) weakens the immune system and can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). If left untreated, it can cause serious health problems.
Hepatitis B and C: It affects the liver and can be transmitted sexually. There is a Hepatitis B vaccine, but there is no specific vaccine for Hepatitis C.
Trichomoniasis: It is usually an infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Symptoms may include itching, discharge and pain during urination.
Bacterial Vaginosis: It is usually caused by the disruption of the bacterial balance in the vagina. Although it is not sexually transmitted, sexual intercourse can affect this condition. Symptoms include foul-smelling discharge.
Yeast Infections: Vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida albicans can be triggered by sexual intercourse. Symptoms such as itching and discharge are observed.
PROTECTION METHODS
Using Condoms: Using latex or polyurethane condoms during sexual intercourse provides protection against many sexually transmitted diseases.
Regular Tests: Regular sexual health tests can help early detection and treatment of diseases.
Vaccines: There are vaccines against some sexually transmitted diseases such as HPV and Hepatitis B.
Education and Awareness: Being informed about sexual health issues can prevent the spread of diseases.
TREATMENT
Antibiotics: Bacterial infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis are treated with antibiotics.
Antiviral Drugs: Viral infections such as herpes and HIV can be managed with antiviral drugs.
Antifungal Drugs: Yeast infections are treated with antifungal drugs.
Being informed about sexually transmitted diseases is important for healthy sexual relationships and general health. When in doubt, it is always best to consult a healthcare professional.
