HERNIA IN MEN AND WAYS TO PREVENT IT

n men, a hernia is a protrusion of abdominal organs or tissues due to a weakness in the abdominal wall or groin area. This condition can often be uncomfortable and painful. The most common types of hernia are inguinal hernia, femoral hernia, umbilical hernia, and incisional (surgical incision) hernia.

TYPES OF HERNIA

Inguinal Hernia:
Definition: As a result of weakening of the muscles in the abdominal wall, the intestines or bladder protrude through the groin canal.

Symptoms: Swelling, pain, and discomfort in the groin area. It is especially noticeable during coughing, lifting heavy objects, or bending over.

Femoral Hernia:
Definition: Although it is usually more common in women, it can also be seen in men. It occurs in the upper thigh.

Symptoms: Swelling and discomfort in the groin area.

Umbilical Hernia:
Definition: Occurs in or around the belly button. It is mostly seen in infants and obese adults.

Symptoms: Swelling and sometimes pain in the abdomen.

Incisional Hernia:
Definition: Occurs as a result of weakness in the abdominal wall at the site of a previous surgical incision.

Symptoms: Swelling and discomfort at the surgical site.
Swelling or protrusion (especially in the groin or belly area)
Pain or discomfort (may increase with coughing, bending, or lifting)
A burning or tense feeling
Weakness or pressure
Nausea and vomiting (in the case of a strangulated hernia)

TREATMENT METHODS
Hernia treatment usually requires surgery, because the hernia does not heal on its own and can get worse over time. Here are common treatment methods:

Surgical Repair:
Open Hernia Surgery: The surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen or groin area and pushes the protruding organ back into place. The weak area is repaired and usually reinforced with a mesh.

Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery: A minimally invasive surgical procedure performed using small incisions and a camera. Provides faster recovery time and less pain.

Laparoscopic Repair:
Definition: Minimally invasive surgery performed using small incisions and a laparoscope.

Advantages: Less pain, faster recovery, smaller scars.

Robotic Surgery:
Definition: Minimally invasive repair performed using robotic surgical systems.

Advantages: More precise surgical procedures, less risk of complications.

Truss or Hernia Belts:
Definition: Used as a temporary solution for patients who cannot undergo surgery or who want to delay surgery. Controls the protrusion by applying pressure to the hernia area.

Note: It is not a long-term solution and cannot prevent the hernia from growing or strangulating.
Prevention Methods

Healthy Weight: Obesity can increase the pressure on the abdominal wall, so it is important to maintain a healthy weight.

Regular Exercise: Strengthening the abdominal muscles can reduce the risk of hernia.

Heavy Lifting Techniques: It is important to use proper techniques and use your leg muscles when lifting heavy objects.

Prevent Constipation: Eating fiber-rich foods and drinking enough water can help prevent constipation and reduce intra-abdominal pressure.

It is important for men who have symptoms of a hernia to consult a health professional. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help prevent complications.
