WHAT ARE THE VARICOSE VEINS IN MEN? WHAT IS THE TREATMENT?

Varicose veins are a health problem that occurs when the veins expand and become tortuous, and are also frequently seen in men. Varicose veins usually occur in the legs and can cause serious health problems as well as aesthetic concerns. The causes, symptoms and treatment methods of varicose veins in men are as follows:

CAUSES

Genetic Factors:
One of the most important causes of varicose veins is genetic predisposition. This condition is more likely to occur in men with a family history of varicose veins.

Age:
As we age, the elasticity of the veins decreases and the vascular valves weaken. This causes blood to flow backwards and accumulate in the veins.

Obesity:
Excessive weight creates extra pressure on the leg veins. This pressure can cause the veins to expand and cause varicose veins.

Sedentary Lifestyle:
Standing or sitting for a long time can negatively affect blood circulation in the legs. This can cause blood to pool in the legs and cause varicose veins.

Hormonal Changes:
Changes in hormone levels in men can also contribute to varicose veins. For example, a drop in testosterone levels can affect vascular health.

Smoking:
Smoking can harden the veins and impair blood circulation. This can trigger varicose veins.

SYMPTOMS

• Swelling, heaviness and pain in the legs
• Visible veins and tortuous veins in the legs
• Itching, burning and skin color changes
• Increased pain after standing for long periods
• Night cramps

TREATMENT METHODS

Exercise:
Regular exercise improves blood circulation and strengthens the leg muscles. This can help prevent varicose veins.

Weight Control:
Reaching a healthy weight reduces pressure on the veins in the legs.

Postural Changes:
Moving and changing positions instead of standing or sitting for long periods of time improves blood circulation.

Compression Stockings:
Compression stockings help to move blood toward the heart by compressing the veins in the legs. This relieves varicose vein symptoms and can prevent new varicose veins from forming.

Sclerotherapy:
Sclerotherapy is a treatment method in which a special solution is injected into varicose veins, causing them to close and disappear over time.

Laser Treatment:
Laser treatment shrinks varicose veins by applying laser beams to them. This method is usually effective for small and medium-sized varicose veins.

Surgery:
Surgery may be required for large and symptomatic varicose veins. In a procedure called stripping, the varicose vein is completely removed. This method is usually used in more advanced cases.

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA):
In this treatment method, laser energy is used to close the varicose vein from the inside. This method can be used as an alternative to surgery and is usually less invasive.

PREVENTION
• Exercising regularly
• Avoiding standing or sitting for long periods of time
• Maintaining a healthy weight
• Avoiding habits that negatively affect vascular health, such as smoking and drinking alcohol

If varicose veins are left untreated, complications such as skin ulcers, blood clots and serious circulation problems can occur. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor when you notice symptoms of varicose veins.
